About Me

I am an English teacher at Coral Academy of Science and I teach grades 6-8. This will be my second year at Coral, and I am looking forward to another successful year of teaching.

I was born and raised in Reno, Nevada and I love being back in my hometown! I graduated from Wooster High School and later on, the University of Nevada, Reno with a bachelor's in secondary education with a major in English. I hope to go back to school to earn my Master's degree in Literacy Studies.

My Educational Experience

I have taught for four years and this will be the beginning of my fifth year. I first taught at Herlong High School (50 miles North of Reno) and there I taught English Language Arts to all of the grades from 7-12. During my time at Herlong, I also had the opportunity to coach cheerleading for two years and was senior class advisor for the class of 2014. Before Herlong, I completed my student teaching at McQueen High School, where I taught freshmen and sophopmore English.

My Educational Philosophy

I have known that I wanted to be a teacher since the 6th grade and all I want is to make the world a better place by helping and guiding our future – our students. I love teaching high school and middle school students because seeing the day they finally realize the importance of an education is one of the most rewarding moments I have had in my career.

I want to teach English because English is not just a subject in school; it is one of the many languages we use to communicate with each other. Humans thrive on communication and I believe that many of the world’s problems could be solved if more people communicated with each other with an open mind. My goal is to ensure that my students leave my classroom with improved communication skills – for when they read, write, or talk – and critical thinking skills to understand the many different perspectives of people and the world around them.

Imparting the skills necessary to become a part of the global workforce requires curriculums that are based on the needs of a student to help them succeed. As an English teacher,  the most useful tools in my classroom is communication mixed with collaboration. The most wonderful moments in my classroom have been from all of the class discussions that lead to students communicating with each other; expressing their opinions without judgment. I am able to provide my students with the environment to freely express themselves through the use of techniques from Love & Logic and Time to Teach. A positive and safe environment allows for the most awe inspiring discussions I have ever had the pleasure of being a part of.

Teaching is the tool that allows for knowledge to grow and bring new discoveries into the world. Teachers provide the world with a sense of guidance; without education, our society and the modern world would collapse upon itself. I believe that the better the quality of the education that a student receives from an educator will better prepare them for the “real world” and give them skills that they can apply to anything.
